My only daughter Tia is twelve and she is beginning to discover that the way you look has an effect on the way people respond to you in society. Embracing her natural hair is what I want for her but I also want her to know that she can chose. She will always know that I see a relaxer as the "creamy crack" but that if her reasons for getting one don't include self hate I will accept it. We sat down together and discussed what goals she had for her hair, here's what she said: long.long.long,long hair!

I explained to her to have long hair you need healthy hair so we have partnered to create just that! She has dedicated her time and effort to achieve her goal by wearing protective styles, sleeping with a satin bonnet, taking a daily multi-vitamin, 6-8 glasses of water a day & caring for her hair with conditioning and oiling it. The process has just begun for us so join in and help your daughter achieve her hair goals too!
Please post some of your pre-teen hair struggles, styles or success. All styles pictured were styled at home by myself unless noted. Here are a few of the styles:
The Southern states have just experienced devastating tornadoes and its not just another tragedy on TV its my life. It's my neighbors, friends, co-workers, family members and fellow statesmen. To drive along a road that you take everyday and see the landscape, the buildings & the homes you had admired along this route gone....erased as if they never existed is mind blowing. Its no longer someone else in a distant place its you! I mourn so intensely for people I have never met but feel that i am missing. I continue to work to come up with ways to help those affected directly that it overwhelms me. My family was blessed to only experience an inconvenience of not having electricity and a slight financial hardship but others lost lives, businesses and homes. Tornadoes have been part of my life since I could remember (even in MI) but I never felt the heartache that I am feeling now during this brutal attack on my adopted home of Alabama. I dont have finacial means to support my Alabama family but I have time and love that I will give until there is nothing left. I know that only a few people will view my blog but of those who do please support the Red Cross as a way to help Alabama & the other Southern states affected. Also take time to stop: Love your family, love your neighbor and give a little back to the world. Thank you
My hair was acting a little moody so I thought i would give her a break. I normally do twists on wet hair but i co-washed my hair two days ago so i just decided to do it on my dry hair. I also wanted to try using the She Moisture Curl enhancer (just in case i un-twist them) and see what results i would get.

Supplies: Shea Moisture Curl Enhancer, satin sponge rollers, clips to hold hair, satin bonnet

Procedure: I simply did two-strand twists (medium size) using the Shea Moisture on each strand of hair and when my entire head was complete I rolled them (3 or 4 in each roller) with the satin sponge rollers. I sleep in my satin bonnet and removed the rollers. Here's the pics...What do you think?
I have found myself surrounded by women who encourage, support & guide me through a amazing journey. Support is easily found on the Internet not in nameless chat rooms but in videos with women who look like me, talk like me & want to truly know me. YouTube is better than any college or cosmetology school! Users like BlackOnyx, DivaKeke76, Naptural85 & Lexiwiththecurl (to name a few) guide you through product reviews, how to videos & answer questions we have all asked at some point! I have never been more proud to be Black & A Woman!
Twitter has open another world that allows people with the same interest to connect with tag lines like #teamnatural & #naturalhair. Locally I have found support in a group we call "Happy to be Nappy" (photo) where we meet on Facebook to share product ideas, ask questions & talk each other off the ledge when we become frustrated! We have also had a product swap to let some of us "product junkies" reorganize.

I believe the most amazing part is the way no one seems to be territorial! We all help & support each other, so to all my Natural sisters, my thinking of being Natural sisters, my relaxed but respect a Natural sisters & the men who love us all- THANKS!
I would continuously see my YouTube sisters rave about how their hair was defined or their curl was elongated but i couldn't duplicate it. I recently did a review on the Ecostyler Moroccan Argon Oil Gel and the initial results were OK but then my hair dried out as it had done previously with other gels. I was left with 2 large containers of gel (Ecostyler Olive Oil & Argon Oil) in my bathroom. I decided I would do a roller set and see how that would work. I was pleasantly surprised! Here's what i did:

First I washed & conditioned my hair, then i put in a leave in conditioner..... in a plastic bowl i mixed olive oil and some 7 in 1 miracle oil....i separated my hair in 4 sections (just to make life easier) and began taking sections from those to roll....before i rolled the hair i used my fingers to apply my oil mixture then i added the argon oil gel...use cold wave rollers with paper over them i rolled my hair in a spiral....After i completed my entire head i sprayed it with the Shea Naturals Spray (see previous post) and put on my satin cap & when to bed....

In the morning, i sprayed my hair again and removed the rollers...my hair WAS NOT hard!!!! The curls came out beautiful! I didnt seperate the curls (i may later in the week), i just pin some back & fluffed! I finally have a successful way to use styling gel....let me know what you guys think!
I decided to try the Eco-styler Moroccan Argan Oil Gel. The first thing i noticed was the smell...pleasant like a green apple so i will begin positively. I didn't have the best results with the Olive oil gel in the past but I was told that the problems I encountered , the flaking, stiffness and drying out would not be there. I began by washing, conditioning , treating (see video) and detangling my hair in the shower. I patted my hair dry and applied the gel by raking it through with my fingers from root to tip. I went quickly to avoid my hair becoming completely dry before i could complete my entire head.

My curls are completely defined and have a beautiful shine while its wet. As my hair begins to dry it begins to feel crunchy so I spray it with the Shea Moisture Oil Mist i purchased earlier this week. I did see improvement but there was still some stiffness. Overall i think if you want a lot of curls this is a good way to achieve them. I believe I will add oil to my hair before applying the gel next time but I wanted to let the gel work alone for this review. I'm not sure what I'll look like in the morning but I will definitely let you know!
I like the softness of my hair but i didn't experience the curl pattern I normally achieve from a braid out. I have to admit that my hair wasn't fully dry because i had somewhere to go so I'm going to continue to use Shea Moisture for a couple weeks and give you guys an update later. Here's a couple of pictures...let me know what you guys think.
I love the way a community has been built that allows people who look like me and have the same issues as me help each other and share. Well i first watched the videos of the ladies I have subscribed to like Divakeke76, LexiWithTheCurls, ShidaNaturals & Lyndaespratley. I was entertained, got some tips, learned something new but was still uninspired. I decided I would just give it a break and check in on Facebook and see what my friends were up to. I noticed a post by one of the fan pages I liked, MyHAIRspiration.com. There was a review for the product line Shea Naturals. We both seem to have the same hair type and she (as well as some others) were raving about how they loved this product and how we should all give it a try. I knew i needed my hair done ASAP but wasn't sure so I asked how much it cost & where to purchase. She responded Target and $10, i was sold. Off to Target where i purchased:
Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque $9.99
Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie $9.99
Shea Moisture Hold & Shine Moisture Mist $9.99

They also have Shampoo & condition but i just bought some Organix so I wasn't investing in more shampoo/conditioner today. I washed my hair and applied the masque. There wasn't much to the directions so i just went root to tip and placed a plastic cap on my hair for about 30 minutes. The smell wasn't bad and the texture of the masque was like whipped shea butter. However i wasn't happy! I was ready to take the remaining two products back to Target unopened! My hair felt weird and although I had defined curl pattern emerging i wasn't experiencing the softness i was use to with my other deep conditioners. I took a deep breath and continued the process. I washed the masque out and began using the smoothie. I felt like i was on a tropical island because my hair was a pina colada lol..I decided to do a braid out and i applied the smoothie to sections of my hair, come through with my fingers and then braid. This seemed promising..Well i don't have a sit under dryer at its midnight so here's a few pictures and we will see how it turns out in the morning..
